Music in movies

When I was child, my favourite movie was High school musical.

High School Musical made 2008 and it’s a popular movie from Disney. I always loved music scenes in High school musical movies, Because they are so amazing and it’s also compelling, because I always wanna sing when I hear a song from movie. But now, I want to show you the trailer from High school musical 3. In this movie was a lot of awesome music scenes so it was really hard to choose something a particular scene, because every music scenes is so amazing in this movie. So I decided to choose the trailer from High school Musical 3!

Movies would be boring without any music

I watched fast and furious 7 again, because it’s my favourite movie. In this movie was lot of music but the most memorable scence was plane scence. In this scence cars were falling from an airplane and music was backround. There isn’t lyrics in this clip, but it was “acoustic” exciting music.
I think music fits this scence very well because it gave the scence more exciting impression. And music get me enthusiastic and I wanted to know quickly what was going to happen next in this movie. Without it the scence would be little bit boring.

What does my Friday sound like?

This final project turned out to be surprisingly difficult (mostly due to technical difficulties), but also creatively. This new project challenged me to listen to different parts of my day and especially the sounds which are directed straight at me versus just general background noise. As I was originally hoping to write and compose a song as the last project, I was also creatively challenged.
Anyhow, I hope you will be able to tell how my day begins and where it ends up taking me during the night. And also, enjoy!

A song of hope

Here’s my final project. Instead of a music landscape I made a song. Hopefully the lyrics are understandable. I might have still edited the song a bit if I’d had the time. Here’s the lyric video, hope you enjoy!

How does poetry affect on music?

As many of you can probably expect, many musicians thrive in their careers because of the logical planning of the songs. And poetry is one of those kind of methods that we can thank from the bottom of our hearts. Still, what exactly does poetry has in common with music and how does it help in process? Easy, it´s all about rhythm!

Nowadays, a very wide group of pop and rock songs have been influenced by poetic details, which include alliteration, timing and rhymes. As a matter of fact these features help musicians to provide nice tracks and invent new ideas as well. Not to mention the easiness to make poetic songs sound like golden masterpiece, it also depends on how creative are the lyrics themselves.
However it does not mean that every meaning of the following tracks should be concrete. Although the point is to make people comprehend the art in their own way. And that’s how it works to songs to leave a golden note in the human minds.

There are also some artists that use this kind of theory in their songwriting. Here are some examples.

Aqua – Barbie Girl
Megadeth – Wanderlust
Psy – Gangnam Style
Madonna – Material Girl
AC/DC – TNT

And last and also the best: Dragon Ball Kai- Dragon Soul

Thank you viewers! I Hope you enjoyed reading my blog post!

A soundscape – a pain in the a$$

I’m just glad this task is over.

When we got the assignment, I was totally lost, and I was under a lot of stress already. So, I got even more stressed and began to get desparate. I had no idea what to do and I thought I couldn’t do anything because I had no idea how to do it! But with a little bit of support and help from my friends, I finally got it done.

It’s nothing big or special, but at least I got it out of the way. This is what I did: I recorded the noises of my own home with my phone, put it all together and put it online. On the video you can hear my dog yelling, me playing piano, my floor squeaking and some other sounds. Here it is, then.

It’s done.
And I’m not doing it again.

Cheesy Finnish pop

I wanted make the most Finnish pop song ever with all the clichés ever and well this is the result

The words consist of words and phrases of popular and well known pop songs and the whole idea was to make it a bit too generic. The whole song was made in a hour and half so keep that in mind when listening to it.

Halfman’s Song

O-o

Go watch/listen it here.

This haunting piece of art (made by a C-list musician on the internet) is a tribute to a character in the TV-series “Game of Thrones”. The character in question–Tyrion Lannister–is a halfman who was born with three curses: He is a dwarf. His mother died giving him birth. His family is rich and proud and doesn’t accept him as a personal and respectable being.

That being said, I can understand the reasoning behind the idea to use a very poetic and a haunting setting for the song. It gives off a vibe as if it was actually sung in the drunkard halls of taverns and keeps in the world of Westeros. The wording itself switches between poetic and imperative styles. It never becomes dull and the poetry in the wording keeps the song sharp as a blade.

How I feel about the song’s words is another thing coming. I love the arrogant but smart words that are used to simulate what Tyrion would sing. The composer didn’t make it a musical, since Tyrion isn’t a pretty faced singer but a sharp-tongued drunkard in the middle of the grey area of morality.

Poetry is a powrful way of giving a song meaning. Since art itself is not easily defined, even imperative words can be poetic. If you think it’s poetic, then it propably is. If you don’t, it’s propably not. At least to you. How you like your peas in your porridge is up to you.

Relaxed urgency

The Intouchables tells a moving story about a quadriplegic man, who’s mental confinement to his home and old ways get raveled once he hires the most unlikely candidate as his assistant.
A complete clip from the movie was unavailable, so I’ll link the song below and describe the scene it’s in.
While speeding through the Parisian early morning traffic in a Maserati, the main duo create an atmosphere which has deeply sunk into my mind. The dark morning and street lights set up a stage which leaves the viewer in a relaxed state. After a while of dodging between cars, the duo gets stopped by the police and have to make their way out of a sticky situation.
The scene’s set already works on it’s own with the colours and calm atmosphere, so the song only adds to it. Fly by Italian composer Ludivico Einaudi features piano and some strings which gives it a very simple feel which is easy on the ears, yet the way they play from pianissimo to forte gives it grandeur to remind the listener that this isn’t just an insignificant song. It also brings a certain desperation to the song. This feeling is increased with the use of very high notes that hop to very low ones. Also the speed of the notes that are played shifts it’s emotion from relaxed to almost urgent. Einaudi used echo and repetition as ways of emphasizing the calmness in the middle of chaos which is seen in the movie. The same type of original compositions are used throughout the movie.

The Good The Bad The known.

This piece of movie music is the champagne of western films. ” The good the bad the known” is the theme to 1966 movie of the same name. If some one comes to you and whistle to me a tune that is western inspirational they most likely whistle this.

The song is composed by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai in 1966. The song sits the movie well because it brings something extra to the movie, something unpredictable. The movie starts whit this song. This is maybe because it is a earworm. The viewer hears this and he/she right away gets the feeling that he/she is in the wild west.

The movie theme was a hit when it “came out.” The soundtrack (the good the bad the ugly)  peaked number four on the Billboard 200 album list in 1966 and stayed there for a year. This is really good for a song that originally was made only for a movie.

Well everybody can agree whit me that this piece of music is the sole to western genre movies.

Music in movies

The Jaws theme song is one of the most famous horror movies, and it’s music is iconic to the genre. The movie is directed by Steven Spielberg, and the soundtrack is composed by John Williams. Jaws was published in 1975.

“Get Out of the Water” is the first scene where the theme music is playing. Even though the screaming  children are playing and seem happy, the atmosphere is tense because the watcher knows that there is something dangerous in the water. When the infamous theme song starts playing, we know that game is over.

The piece consists mostly of two notes played over and over again with a rising tempo. The minor scale gives negative associations, and the change in tempo is what makes the atmosphere shift  from tense to threatening  and intense, which is typical for thriller and horror movies.

Without the music, the viewers would not know when the scary part is actually coming. In modern horror films this is used to startle the watchers. Older movies tend to rely on the power of music.

Pippin’s song

Pippin’s song or Edge of the night is a short piece of music that appears in the movie “The Fellowship of the ring” but is originally taken from Tolkiens poem “Walking song” that is actually in the first book. It all comes from the last stanza, though some lines are skipped, and some are slightly rewritten.

The piece is  part of a bigger “The Steward of Gondor”, which was written by Howard Shore and arranged by Philippa Boyens. The song is called “The Edge of Night” after a phrase in the lyrics. Its melody was composed by Billy Boyd, who plays Pippin. This is where the piece  gets the more commonly used name “Pippin’s song”.

The song is of sorrow and longing but also adventure. It is a comforting song for the character of Pippin but it brings memories of the past and fears for the future. In fact the song was never meant to be in the scene nor the whole movie, but Billy Boyd felt it fit the scene and would create more drama and deepen the atmosphere.

Bird Set Free

Sia has a song called Bird Set Free. Here’s some of the lyrics:

There’s a scream inside that we all try to hide
We hold on so tight, we cannot deny
It eats us alive, oh it eats us alive…
I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I shout it out like a bird set free.

I like this song a lot because it really shows emotion. It talks about the pain that we all have inside us, the pain that we all want to let go of. It’s a  song that lets out that pain. At first there’s a tense emotion in the song, until the chorus, when it’s all let go, and there’s freedom. I especially like the part that talks about how the person doesn’t care if they sing off key, because they sing for themselves, to let that pain go. I love that thought. The songwriter uses lots of metaphors, which give the song more variety and emotion.
