Inception

Inception is a pretty good movie. One of the reasons is the way the movie uses music. One of my favorite scene is the ending, I think the music really makes the ending great.

The music for this movie was written by Hans Zimmer and the name of the song in the end is Time. This movie is really dramatic and you don’t always know what is going on, even in the ending. I think the music is perfect because it doesn’t give anything away. It complaments the scene perfectly.

In the end we are not sure if the main character is going to have a happy ending or not. Everything seems good but you can’t really be sure. The music makes it seem like everything is done now, it is all over, but at one point the music stops and it seems like everything is great, until the very last bit when the music starts playing again, and again we don’t know what is going on. There isn’t a lot of dialogue in the end, but the music makes up for that. The music makes the story go forward. It is the perfect thouch to a complex scene like this.

IN A VERY COLD LAND

At first we were a little bit nervous about that journey but when I came at midnight, yes pretty late for us and I think for everyone, we were so excited. The first day was the weirdest, new place, new school, an entirely new country and especially the weather. Here it is so cold we can´t belive that someone can survive with -25 degrees  in the winter. Luckly,  we don´t have these temperatures in Sardinia. In the second day we went to the Cocolate factory where we ate delicious sweets and a lot of chocolate, of course. It rained all day, we´re retourned at home all wet. What a such bad weather. At the evening we have gone at bowling to play with the others in teams, and one of my friends has an orrible maledition so we´ve lost a lot of points. The after day we went to the city center and we´ve played a scavenger hunt and that was so funny. We did a lot of shopping!. This is our travel diary

Our experience in Finland: Luca and Carlo

Well, it´s only the third day here, but we can say that for now we´re having so much fun. The first day was a really tough because of the journey of the day before and because of the cold and rainy weather, but we can say that the chocolate was so good that we gained 10kg of fat. The city centre is so amazing, the music we listened to yesterday was really nice(not for Carlo who is ignorant) and the scavenger hunt was so fun, good job teachers. Today it´s a  bit calmer, but it´s being interesting anyway.

Another great thing about Finland is the amount of beautiful girls around here(says Carlo, but Luca kind of agrees). We are sure we will have a lot of fun even in these last days here in Helsinki. 😀

Our experience in Finland

We`re here just few days but we´re having much fun. Everyday we´re very busy because of all the activities we do. Our hosts are very nice and very friendly.

We arrived at midnight after a lot of flights, we were so tired and excited for a new experience. The cold hasn´t stopped us from doing new things. The next day we went to school and after the Italian presentation  we went to chocolate factory “Fazer”, here we ate as much chocolate as we wanted and they also gave us a bag of free samples: needless to say, everyone was amazed. And at evening we went to Myllypuro Areena Space bowling and after we went home. On Wednesday  we saw a classical concert and we had a lunch at McDonald`s (as usual).

The scavenger hunt didn´t go well for us but we had fun still, we saw a lot of important monuments- the weather was cool, luckily and in a weird there was the sun. It dind´t rain at all.

We hope to have a nice weekend,

Desiree, Camilla and Luca S.Fai clic per visualizzare le opzioni

Travel diary of a non-traveler

Before the Italians came to Finland, I was very excited, and I was still excited while waiting at the airport, even though I was tired. Right now I’m very tired but happy.

The Italians have all been very nice to us Finns, and we all get along with each other, even though we have some differences. The Italians are all very nice and most of them are quite talkative. They’re fun and interesting company!

Our schedule has been a bit hectic and I’m exhausted, but I’m enjoying everything we do. I’m glad about joining this exchange!

We, Finn-talians, Andrea and Giuseppe.

Helsinki is a wonderful city, despite cold. We´re both staying with Pietari, so our experience is a bit different from the one of the other Italians. Anyway, we binded with are partner and with each other. Since the week ain´t over yet, we don´t know how the experience will have actually been. So… we´ll see! See you in November!

Hello :)

This is Caroline, Caroline and Oline here ;))

We have to write on this blog together because we are much more than your guys so we have to be in groups.

This is a group presentation since we are a group and we look forward to read and comment on a post from a finish student 🙂

In our everyday life music means a lot to us. We all listen music everyday. We listen to music when we are in the shower, when we do homework and on the way to our school. We use music for many diffrent situations. We like sad and emotional songs, when we are feeling down.

We like to party. We do it mostly on Friday’s or Saturday’s. We like to dance and we do it to dance and party music. We could not imagine a party without music. some of the music we listen to is for example… picture

One of our favorite musicians is Nicklas Holmgreen Fridh. He is an danish rapper.

POEMS IN MUSIC

I want to talk about an italian song called “Io non mi sento italiano” written by Giorgio Gaber. I already knew this song but I started to appreciate it more since I live in Finland because it’s a a poetry dedicated to Italians and all their problems. The meaning of the song would be like that in the world Italians are appreciated because we come from a wonderfull place and because we have the best food, but at the same time we have big problems in our country and everyone knows that. Here the singer says that he doesn’t fell like an italian but that fortunatley or unfortunatly he is.Well that’s the same feeling that I have since I live here because sometimes I’m really proud about my country and my people and sometimes i think that maybe It would have been better If I had born somewhere else. I think that song which look like poetries are even better than the poetries because it’s easier to follow them even if they treat about difficult arguments and because you can memorize them easily. I love to listen to a poetry with music while when I listen to a normal poetry with no sound at all I just fell kind of bored.

A hidden hand in pop

Teemu Brunila is a great songwirter, who has had a hand in many modern day Finnish pop songs which have lived for several years and not only been summer hits or one hit wonders. Born on November 24th in 1976, Brunila has written a ton of terribly catchy songs, yet not many Finns are aware of his influence. So what would be the best place to start telling you about him? Well, I guess I’ll step into the 90s.

The mastermind himself

The mastermind himself

The Crash was a Finnish band started in Turku by Teemu Brunila and Samuli Haataja, active from 1991 to 2009. The Crash was a relatively successful band, even reaching international fame before calling it quits in 2009. Some of their most famous songs include Sugared (original released in 1999, a cover in Finnish called Pimeä Onni was made by artists Samuli Edelmann and Jippu in 2010), Lauren Caught My Eye (2002), Pony Ride (2006) and Star (2002).
While in The Crash Teemu Brunila sang, played the guitar and keyboard. Also a great majority of their songs have the penmanship of Brunila in them.

Sugared, a song from 1999 which’ melody might be familiar to many

Brunila decided that solely a career in music wouldn’t quench his desire to evolve intellectually and so, went to University in Turku, majoring in law. He’s also studied at Turku School of Economics and said that his studies have helped him understand the music business better and also been a great help in making contracts. He hasn’t taken up a career as a lawyer though, as he has far more to offer to the music industry than to the legal world.

Writing and composing is something Brunila does beautifully, so it’ll be no surprise that he has written some songs for Finnish artists which have been major successes. Some of the artists he has written with include Anna Abreu, Jare&Villegalle and Rajaton. He has also worked with artist Jenni Vartiainen on many of her albums and written famous songs of hers such as Ihmisten edessä and Nettiin.
In addition to writing and composing music to various Finnish artists, Brunila has also composed and written music for such foreign artists as David Guetta, Pixie Lott and Trey Songz. He is the first Finn to have co-written a song for an album which has reached to the top of the American Billboard 200 album chart.
Currently Brunila is rumored to be a member of the virtual band Studio Killers, but as the identities of the band members identities have never been revealed, these remain only as rumours.

Studio Killers – Ode To the Bouncer, a hit rumoured to be from him

All in all, Brunila has an academic education which alone is admirable but has also managed to make music which has stayed on Finnish radio stations playlists until this day. Not many know him by name, but his mind is hidden into many of todays most popular songs. Although much could be said about his excellent career, it’s best to let his work speak for itself.

Some of Brunilas most recent work in writing, composing and even singing!

Einojuhani Rautavaara

Einojuhani Rautavaara is a Finnish world-famous composer. He was born on October 9th 1928 in Helsinki, Finland. The son of opera singer Eino Rautavaara and doctor Elsa Teräskieli, Einojuhani comes from a long line of musicians which he continued himself with his son, musician Markojuhani Rautavaara.

Einojuhani Rautavaara

After studying philosophy in Helsinki University, Einojuhani studied in the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, The Juilliard School in New York and also in Switzerland and Köln. Alongside his work as a composer, he has also worked as a music critic for the Finnish newspaper Iltasanomat, as principal at Käpylä conservatory and even taught composing as a professor at Sibelius Academy. Some of his most famous students at the academy include Kalevi Aho, Magnus Lindberg, Olli Mustonen and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
He has since retired from his other professions and continues to solely compose.

The most famous piece by Einojuhani is probably his 7th symphony (Angel of Light) composed in 1994. Some other famous works of his include Cantus Arcticus, Vincent and his 8th symphony (The Journey).

Einojuhani’s style can best be described as eclectic. His preference in composing styles has grown with him from his earlier works, which can be categorized as neoclassic, to his present works which have traits from the romantic genre. Throughout his working life, his pieces have taken effect from his personal life and can be well described as avant garde.

Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes and Hanoi Rocks

Hanoi Rocks was a Finnish glam punk rock band from the 80’s. Finland’s major export to the world of heavy metal, Hanoi Rocks, drew much of their sound and inspiration from ’70s glam rock and were able to fuse the two styles more successfuly than Möntley crue. Hanoi Rocks were founded in 1980 by singer Michael Monroe (born Matti Fagerholm) and guitarist Andy McCoy (born Antti Hulkko); after some lineup changes, the rest of the group consisted of guitarist Nasty Suicide (born Jan Stenfors), bassist Sam Yaffa (born Saki Takamäki), and drummer Gyp Casino (born Jesper Sporre).

All members except Monroe had previously played with one or both of the Finnish punk bands Briard and Pelle Miljoona Oy. Their Scandinavian-only (at first) debut album, Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, was released in 1981, and the band members soon went to London to promote themselves and record Oriental Beat. After it was completed, Casino was fired and replaced by ex-Demon Preacher and Dark drummer Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley.

Hanoi Rocks was never the huge success in Finland that it is now. They were quite literally laughed out of the country and were told that they’d never make it. Later in their fame Hanoi was asked to promote Finland in Japan but they refused since “Finland never gave them anything”.

Hanoi Rocks signed to CBS in 1983 and began to spread their name in Britain; their remake of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Up Around the Bend” became their only U.K. chart single the next year, from the album Two Steps from the Move. The band ended the year with a tour of the U.S., but Razzle was killed in a tragic automobile accident while a passenger in Mötley Crüe lead singer Vince Neil’s car. (Neil was convicted of vehicular manslaughter.) Razzle was replaced by ex-Clash drummer Terry Chimes, but things were not quite the same for Monroe. He gave the band notice early in 1985, and the group broke up in May after a farewell concert. Chimes, McCoy, and Suicide formed the short-lived Cherry Bombz, Yaffa joined Jetboy, and Monroe recorded a solo album, Not Fakin’ It, that briefly made the U.S. charts in 1989. Monroe, Suicide, and Yaffa reunited in 1994 as Demolition 23.

Twelve Shots on the Rocks

However, Monroe and McCoy re-formed Hanoi Rocks in 2002, releasing Twelve Shots on the Rocks on the Major Leiden label, and started touring once again. The new lineup of the band issued Another Hostile Takeover, also on Major Leiden, in 2005. That year and the next, Hanoi Rocks toured Europe and Asia, and in 2007 the group released a new full-length, Street Poetry, on Demolition Records. But Monroe and McCoy announced what would appear to be the final breakup of Hanoi Rocks in 2008, and the group subsequently played a series of farewell shows at Helsinki’s Tavastia Club.

Hanoi Rocks had a short lifespan as a band but they created a cult following that still to this day adore anything that has to do with the band. All the boys in the band were young when they got famous (Sami Yaffa being 17), so even after the band broke up, they had full lives to live and to keep on rockin’.

Children Of Bodom

During my young ages I found out that I was quite obsessed to metal music. At ages of 13 I found something unique, something that has to do with my own home country and it was a famous band called Children Of Bodom. Honesty I did not know anything about that band unless I heard that this band is Finnish and its popular of its hardcore rhythms, aggressive yells. Children Of Bodom, also know as “COB” is also renowned of its fantastic solos and melodies which are provided by the bands Lead guitarist, Alexi Laiho.

Once only this band has been organized in 1993 in the Espoo City when the band has grouped up for the first time to play melodic metal music. Four years later this band published its first album “Something Wild” which provided a new special style of playing melodic death metal. In short, this band made an excellent start for its career.

Album: Something Wild

In 2005 Children Of Bodom has made the best achievement in its whole music history. One of the band´s highly considered album “Ridden Years” has gathered tremendous amount of fans in Stockholm to listen the best hits of the band. This master piece has featured the bands first concert album ever recorded. Soon, after this album has been published the number of fans has been rising and the bands merchandise products started to be out of stock. Although this was the best year in Chindren of Bodom´s history.

Album: Ridden Years

As I dare to say Children Of Bodom never had a downhill in producing its music, still its quite possible that it had lost some of its fans because slight changes in its music. Nevertheless this band is still considered as one of the most admired metal bands in Finnish music history.

Bands members: Alexi Laiho (Lead Guitar and vocals), Roope Latvala (Rhythm and solo guitar), Henkka Blacksmith (Bass), Jaska Raatikainen (Drums), Janne Wirman (Keyboard)

Pikku Geekkosen Posti

Pikku G, meaning “Little G”, was one of the most successful and influential singers at the beginning of the twenty first century Finland. Henri Vähäkainu, the man behind the name is not any sort of relevance these days. Little G was about 15 years old when the whole country (or at the very least, its crowd of young’uns) was singing along the lyrics of “Kylki Kyljessä”, “Me Ollaan Nuoriso” and “Romeo Ja Julia”.

rc3a4jc3a4hdysvaara_albumi

Little G is now working under the stage name “G” stripping himself of the title “little”. Little G was announced “The Most Positive Finn” in 2004. (Like that’s hard to do) On the twistside, he has told that the pressure of being popular had struck him down and made his life just a tad bit too stressful.

Sadly, G was charged of delivering cocaine during October 2009, which was resolved against him in court only seven months later.

On a personal note: I have never owned a record, CD or an album other than Pikku G’s Räjähdysvaara and Suora Lähetys. Funny, ain’t it? For reals though, he was very popular in his time and ridiculously influential, even to the Finnish language itself. Every once in a while some adults (or reverse hipsters like me) find an opportunity to live off of nostalgia. I recommend these two songs for people who cannot understand Finnish, since otherwise the magic would be lost on it.

Just don’t watch the music videos. Rule #1: Never ruin the song with a lackluster music video!

Me Ollaan Nuoriso. Trans: We Are The Young. (We Are The Future)

Kylki Kyljessä. Trans: Side By Side

In fact while you’re here, why don’t you go ahead and actually watch another influential and really old music video. Yes, this time you CAN watch the video.

Music and movies – Harry Potter

I wanted to choose one of the Harry Potter movies for this task, because I love the movies and I adore the soundtracks!

In this scene from the final movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the main trio is seen running through the castle yard, where wizards and witches are fighting one another. The scene shares a name with the song playing in the background: Courtyard Apocalypse. The music in the whole movie was composed and conducted by Alexandre Desplat.

Just like the scene wouldn’t be tragic enough, the music adds a sad, dark feeling to it. This kind of dramatic orchestra music is not rare for the Harry Potter movies. I chose this scene because in this particular scene the music is very important, because there isn’t much talking. Without music the scene would feel empty, because in the scene the fighting of the main trio isn’t personal, they’re just passing through the courtyard towards another location. The music brings up the scene and makes it more memorable, the melody is quite catchy. Adding this dramatic music to the scene also tells that the fight, even though the main character flees from it, is very important and big.
